Since its founding in 1783, Boston University had never embarked on a comprehensive fundraising initiative—until the Choose to Be Great campaign, which set an ambitious goal of raising $1 billion. With the assistance of TSEC talent, the campaign exceeded expectations, reaching a historic $1.85 billion to support financial aid, faculty development, research and campus improvements.

To celebrate this monumental achievement, BU enlisted the talent at TSEC to craft an unparalleled experience for the Campaign Victory Celebration. We were involved in every phase of strategizing, designing and executing the extensive visuals, ensuring the evening would be an unforgettable testament to BU’s legacy.

Planning began 10 months in advance as we devised strategies to effectively showcase the excellence of Boston University to its diverse audience. BU has a rich, yet largely untold history, and we saw an opportunity to highlight these lesser-known moments to demonstrate how the university of today is a natural continuation of its storied past. To communicate this, we designed two distinct events, each serving to amplify this message in unique ways.

With our guidance, the George Sherman Student Union was chosen as the venue for the gala celebration. A space once representative of BU’s past, it was transformed into a sophisticated and immersive experience for 300 of BU’s most generous donors. A custom 70-foot projection showcased campus life while honoring the donors who helped make the campaign a success. Pop-up presenters, dynamic student entertainment and surprise streamer cannons that punctuated the announcement of the total funds raised in the campaign guaranteed to keep the evening engaging and vibrant.

The following evening, BU expanded its celebration to 3,000 members of the BU community at the Agganis Arena. At the heart of this Campaign Victory Celebration, featuring 500 performers, including the Boston Pops, was the 90-minute, 3D-mapped narrative that intertwined BU’s rich history with the campaign’s mission. The story fluidly moved between the past and present, illustrating BU’s unwavering commitment to diversity, research, community, and an inclusive vision for the future. Notable alumni such as Alexander Graham Bell, Alfre Woodard, Barbara Jordan, Olympic Gold-medallist Mark Eruzione, and Dr Martin Luther King Jr. were celebrated for their lasting impact.

This two-day celebration created institutional pride and showcased a legacy that had previously been overlooked at Boston University, firmly establishing its vital position in higher education for the years ahead.
